Camille Walala: Square Eyes

A person stands indoors against a vibrant, geometric mural featuring bold stripes, wavy shapes, and blocks of color in purple, orange, red, black, and white. The individual is dressed in a striking, colorful outfit: a purple wide-brimmed hat, a purple oversized blazer, a teal shirt, and bright red pants tucked into blue socks with dark sneakers.

Square Eyes is a newly commissioned spectacular wall painting by Camille Walala in the Lowry’s unique Promenade Gallery. Camille’s eye-catching, colourful geometric designs have appeared around the world. Often inspired by cityscapes, she turns everyday places into bright, positive spaces for all to enjoy.

Square Eyes retains Camille’s bold and vibrant style, while bringing in new shapes, colours and use of texture. Camille was inspired by the unique views of Media City across the water from Lowry’s Promenade Gallery; she wanted to mirror the panorama by creating her own joyful metropolis.

Part of Lowry’s 25th Anniversary programme this is the first in a new series of annual commissions inviting major international artists to respond to the gallery’s unique location and views of Salford Quays and MediaCity.
