Discover Salford on foot at the 2026 Salford Walking Festival

From peaceful nature reserves and waterside routes to wildlife encounters and fascinating local history, there is plenty to discover on foot in Salford this autumn.
The Salford Walking Festival returns from Saturday 5 September to Saturday 31 October 2026, bringing more than 40 walks and activities to parks and green spaces across the city.
Organised by the Salford Ranger Team, the festival offers something for everyone. Whether you want to enjoy a gentle autumn stroll, explore somewhere new or pull on your walking boots for a more challenging route.
See Salford differently
The festival is a chance to discover places and stories you may not have encountered before.
Follow the River Irwell, explore the city’s mosslands and woodlands or uncover hidden gems on a six-mile walk from Peel Park to Salford Quays.
History lovers can follow in the footsteps of Queen Victoria, hear stories of Peel Park’s royal visitors or discover filming locations connected to Hobson’s Choice.
There are also guided walks exploring areas including Worsley, Kersal, Irlam, Clifton, Walkden and Cadishead.
Get closer to nature
Salford’s parks and countryside are full of wildlife and the festival offers plenty of opportunities to experience it.
Join local experts to look for birds across the Mosslands, discover the surprising variety of fungi growing in our woodlands or learn more about some of Clifton Country Park’s oldest trees.
As evening falls, you can also head out with the Ranger Team and use a bat detector to search for these fascinating creatures at locations including Blackleach Country Park, Worsley Woods, Peel Park and Kersal Dale.
Don’t forget your torch!
Walk, slow down and reconnect
Not every walk is about covering lots of miles.
The programme includes relaxed social walks, mindful photography sessions and wellbeing walks designed to help you slow down and enjoy your surroundings.
Families can take part too, with buggy-friendly walks, Tiny Tots Rambles and Halloween trails planned for the October half-term.
For those looking for more of a challenge, there are longer countryside routes and beginner navigation sessions where you can learn how to use a map and compass.
Plan your walk
Many of the festival’s activities are free, although some have a small charge. Certain walks must be booked in advance, while others allow you to simply turn up.
Walks vary in length, difficulty and accessibility, so check the individual event information before setting off. Suitable footwear and clothing for the weather are recommended.
