Dear England

A promotional photo featuring an actor cast as Gareth Southgate dressed as a football player in an England kit with the number 6 on the jersey. He stands with hands on hips, looking down at the ground under a spotlight. The background is a large, black-and-white projection of a stadium filled with bright, blurred lights, creating a dramatic atmosphere. The stage floor is dark, emphasising the contrast between the performer and the illuminated backdrop.

The National Theatre’s Olivier Award-winning smash hit is coming to Salford for four weeks only, following a record-breaking run in the West End.

It’s time to change the game. The country that gave the world football has since delivered a painful pattern of loss. The England men’s team has the worst track record for penalties in the world, and manager Gareth Southgate knows he needs to open his mind and face up to the years of hurt to take team and country back to the promised land.

From multi award-winning writer James Graham (Sherwood, BBC), Dear England is a ‘gripping’ (The Times) and timely play that delves into the highs and lows of English football through the lens of Gareth Southgate’s transformative leadership. Directed by Rupert Goold (Patriots, Cold War) this five-star ‘new stage epic’ (Telegraph) captures the emotional journey of the England men’s team as they try to redefine success, resilience and pressure both on and off the pitch.
