Carousel of Us – an exhibition

Carousel of Us – an exhibition
Photography by Breige Cobane
starring the people of Swinton

Carousel of Us was a theatrical production that took place in Swinton Square shopping precinct in July 2024. It was created by long time collaborators, artists Lowri Evans and Renato Bolelli Rebouças, who make theatre in unexpected places.

A huge cast of talented performers brought scenes to life in empty shop units and the open marketplace, taking the audience on a mystery tour led by a guide. Each scene was set in a different decade, telling stories from everyday life in the precinct and culminating in a glorious finale with dance, music and bubbles!

Salford based photographer, Breige Cobane, came to photograph Carousel of Us and captured some truly magical moments. Theatre is such a short lived medium, it doesn’t last long - so these photographs will be cherished for a long time to come. They serve as a document of all that was achieved, as well as showing what is possible in a short space of time with lots of personalities, hard work and creativity.

Carousel of Us was inspired by old photographs of the shopping precinct. Researching the past gave clues about the place now. Fond memories and uncertainties about the future were uncovered; our shopping habits are changing and so is the world around us.

Considering it all began with old photographs; these new photographs are the perfect way to commemorate Carousel of Us and celebrate the incredible community that made it so.
