BBC Philharmonic
Salford residents now have an orchestra to call their own, with the announcement of a major new partnership between Salford City Council and the BBC Philharmonic.
The new relationship, worth £20million over eight years, has been established in the run up to the BBC's creation of a new centre in the North at mediacity:uk, Salford Quays.
The partnership will enable the Orchestra to build active links with Salford and its communities, making possible new opportunities for young musicians to develop their skills and career aspirations, whilst also helping to raise the profile of the city nationally and internationally.
From 2011 the BBC Philharmonic will be based in a dedicated state-of-the-art studio at mediacity:uk which will also be the focus for its community and learning activities in Salford. In the meantime, the Orchestra will work closely with Salford City Council, the Salford Music Service (MAPAS) and schools to begin a programme of musical projects.
The partnership will also give young people and other Salford residents the opportunity to see the BBC Philharmonic in action at the BBC Proms and other events.
