Ever wondered what's hidden behind the windows, walls and roofs of Salford's oldest and most intriguing buildings? The national project, Heritage Open Days, throws open the doors of a whole range of enchanting and entralling venues not normally open to the public.

Buy gifts, watch re-enactments, buy fresh produce from the farmers' markets stalls and take part in bygone harvest ceremonies. With mead and wine tent for the adults and have-a-go archery for the kids. All proceeds go to the Extraordinary Ordsall fundraising campaign. It contains over 50 examples of Victorian decorative stonework and 16 beautiful stained glass windows, three of which are by famour Victorian stained glass window maker Charles Kempe. 2a, Alexandra Road, Peel Green, Eccles M30 7HJ Step back in time in this glorious reproduction 1920s cinema complete with 1927 Wurlitzer organ and relive the golden days of silent movies. Explore the Hope-Jones museum of the theatre organ - dedicated to the inventor Robert Hope Jones and featuring some of his earliest organs dating back to 1894 - or enjoy on the regular lunchtime concerts held every Wednesday at 1.00pm. On Friday there will be regular guided tours of the organ chamber, while on Saturday there will be continuous free theatre organ concerts for you to enjoy. The medieval church of St Mary the Virgin can boast of being the most ancient building in Salford! Special features to look out for include an expansive medieval nave ceiling and south door, St Catherine's Chapel and historic tombs and memorial tablets. The Working Class Movement Library is a unique collection of pamphlets, books, cartoons, newsletters, posters, badges and more which captures the stories of working people from the 1760s to the present day. The library is housed in a stunning building on the Crescent in the historic Chapel Street district of the city. Take a behind the scenes tour of the imposing Salford Civic Centre in the heart of Swinton. This impressive building with its 38m high clock tower was completed in 1934 and is now the home of Salford City Council. Numbers are limited so please call in advance to book your place.

All aboard the Princess Katherine for this relaxing sightseeing tour around Salford Quays. The tour will last 1 hour and will take in the sights of the quays before travelling along the historic Manchester Ship Canal into Manchester and the River Irwell before returning to Salford Quays. The Bridgewater Heritage Boat Company are delighted to offer two canal cruises. The morning cruise is 1 hour long and runs from Worsley to Boothstown and back, while the afternoon tour is 2 hours long and runs from Worsley to historic Barton Aqueduct and back. Both tours have on-board commentary as well as free refreshments and children's activities. Numbers are limted so please book early.
