Salford Triathlon

Comment from Cllr John Merry

Cllr John Merry

Leader of Salford City Council, Cllr John Merry said "We are immensely proud of our world class triathlon events, but we're giving them a rest this year because of a number of circumstances which have conspired against us.

"Most notably, our elite athletes will be locked into preparations for the Beijing Olympics on our usual weekend in July and BBC Sport who've covered the event extensively in the past, wouldn't be available on this particular day either. When we looked at different dates earlier in the year, it would then have clashed with other high profile triathlon events. In among all of this, the large-scale building work for mediacity:uk presented us with a further challenge in developing a suitable route for participants.

"Spectators and competitors won't be disappointed because we are still committed to hosting two further world cups, fulfilling our agreement with the ITU. The first has a provisional date of Sunday, 26 July 2009, when I am a sure our event will be bigger and better than ever before.

"In the meantime, we're promising a packed programme of events in Salford so people will still be able to come down and enjoy Salford Quays in all their glory."
