The Quays

There's water, water everywhere at The Quays - Salford's unique leisure destination and the city's premier tourist offer.

Thriving Salford Quays has seen many ups and downs throughout its long history. Now a major regeneration success story, The Quays has been transformed into Greater Manchester's waterfront, home to bars, restaurants, residences and businesses, as well as internationally renowned venues such as The Lowry, Imperial War Museum North, MediaCityUK and Manchester United Football Club.

The area is Britain's largest inland waterway, with the Manchester Ship Canal providing all the water. Built as a port to compete with local rivals Liverpool, The Quays was once an important dock for ships transporting goods as far afield as Canada. The docks are now gone, but today, after massive regeneration, which created this unmissable waterside leisure location, the water is cleaner and more accessible than ever.

The water offers a whole host of great activities. Salford Watersports Centre at The Quays takes advantage of the massive resource right on its door. The centre offers open water swimming, yachting, canoeing and windsurfing courses and tuition for all abilities. It's also the centre of all the action during the Salford BG Triathlon World Cup.

There's the chance to enjoy a self-guided heritage trail around the water at The Quays. Hop on board a ride on a leisurely cruise taking in the local sights from Manchester city centre, or head out further on a cruise to Liverpool on the Manchester Ship Canal with Mersey Ferries. Alternatively if you have your own boat, The Quays is perfect for a stop over with a large number of moorings available.

All this, plus unrivalled local fishing opportunities, or simply the chance to enjoy a drink on the river bank, make The Quays a great place to enjoy messing about on the water.
