The Lowry

Award-winning, astounding, show-stopping, outstanding; a new superlative will have to be invented as The Lowry's used them all up! Built in 2000 at the booming Salford Quays, this astonishing building is a shrine to all things art, with galleries, theatres, workshops, cafes, shops and even our very own Salford Tourist Information Centre.

It's worth a visit just to sit outside and admire the vision in metal and glass that is The Lowry, currently in hot competition with neighbouring Imperial War Museum North for the 'most amazing architecture' award. But you'd be missing out on a whole world of entertainment inside, so step in and take your pick from the world of entertainment within.

Theatres

The Lowry's three diverse theatre spaces offer a perfect setting for everything from community performances to The Bolshoi Ballet! The Lyric Theatre is the biggest of the theatres and plays host to West End musicals, dance extravangazas and the annual pantomime. The more intimate Quays Theatre welcomes touring companies, comedians and live music, while The Studio is a flexible space able to host workshops, amateur performances and film screenings.

Galleries

As you'd expect from the name, The Lowry holds a vast and captivating collection by Mr L S Lowry himself which changes with every new exhibition and proves there's a lot more to the nation's favourite artist than matchstick men and matchstick cats and dogs. The three gallery spaces also showcase inspiring and illuminating contemporary and historical art with an ever-changing programme of exhibitions throughout the year.

Food and drink (and more!)

And as well as all this, The Lowry runs courses in everything from practical art and drama, kids' crafts and singing, in addition to a huge number of pre-show talks and post-show workshops. The Terrace Restaurant offers pre-theatre high quality dinners while refreshments can also be found at the Terrace Cafe Bar, Tower Coffee Shop and the theatre bars. Choose a souvenir form the gift shop or the Salford Tourist Information Centre or simply take a stroll around this amazing building.
