BBC Philharmonic

Salford residents have an orchestra to call their own through the partnership between Salford City Council and the BBC Philharmonic. This relationship was established in the run up to the creation of the BBC's new centre in the North at MediaCityUK, where the orchestra is based in a dedicated state-of-the-art studio.

It hosts rehearsals, concerts, recording and broadcasts as well as providing a space for the orchestra's community and learning activities. This includes working closely with Salford City Council, the Salford Music and Performing Arts Service (MAPAS) and schools on a programme of musical projects. The partnership gives young people and other Salford residents the opportunity to see the BBC Philharmonic in action at various venues and events.

The musicians have made themselves heard across the city, playing concerts in the community from Eccles Fire Station, Ordsall Hall and Worsley Court House to Salford Royal Hospital, Perkins Parts Factory, the Lowry Outlet Mall and many more.

The BBC Philharmonic and The Lowry won the Best Event award for their participation in the 2015 Get Creative Family Arts Festival involving Lego and Live Music.

These active links with Salford and its communities have made possible new opportunities for young musicians to develop their skills and career aspirations, whilst also helping to raise the profile of the city nationally and internationally.

The Salford Family Orchestra, another BBC Philharmonic project, successfully brings together enthusiastic musicians and their families who live or work in Salford. Beginners and experienced players aged from age 8 to 80+ are welcome to get involved whether they play an instrument or not. Every year, the orchestra and chorus create a new celebratory piece of music to perform as part of the BBC's annual celebration of music - BBC Music Day.

The BBC Philharmonic has also developed a free classical concert series in the heart of Salford in partnership with the University of Salford, Salford City Council and Salford Community Leisure. Chamber Music Salford takes place monthly on Mondays at 5.45pm at Peel Hall on the University of Salford's Peel Park Campus.

They feature chamber ensembles formed from the BBC Philharmonic's world class musicians and guest artists, performing a range of classical music, from well known gems to new, exciting pieces. Entry to these concerts is by donation, which can be made at the door. Your contribution supports the continued development of new music in Salford. Future concerts in the series will be available online.

There's always an exciting range of concerts, projects and much more coming up throughout the year. Information on all forthcoming events and concerts can be found on the BBC Philharmonic website. These include tickets to studio concerts at MediaCity, 30% of which are allocated to Salford residents.
