Discover Salford | A Music City

Music

Salford is known for its rich musical history and continues to present a wide-ranging musical offer both on and off the stage.

Salford Music Festival is always a popular annual highlight in September with its diverse and exciting array of new and established talent. Featuring the best in live music from rock, pop, metal and dance to indie, folk and blues, it showcases over 100 acts which play across the city at a host of venues.

Also taking place every Autumn is the Kings Arms Festival, a full weekend of music, comedy and unexpected surprises. Previous line ups include The Farm, Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott & Cherry Ghost, Clint Boon and Steve Craddock!

Every May bank holiday, one of the country's foremost music festivals, Sounds From the Other City celebrates new and emerging talent at a range of venues along the historic Chapel Street corridor including Islington Mill. Also at the mill is the fabulous Fat Out Festival with three days of music across three main stages over the Easter weekend.

As Salford's leading one day celebration of culture, SFTOC unites the cream of the national and international scene with some of the city's finest independent promoters, collectives and club nights.

Following last year's success, this year's Irlam Live line-up, taking place on Saturday 4 June 2017,  features Legend Friday, Soulfest Saturday and Retro Sunday.

Salford also has an orchestra to call its own through a partnership between Salford City Council and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra who perform concerts in their state-of-the-art studio at MediaCityUK. They also perform free monthly chamber music concerts at Peel Hall on the University of Salford campus where they have also recently launched the Red Brick Sessions.   Peel hall is also a venue for performances by Salford Symphony, an amateur orchestra which provides platform opportunities for talented musicians.

Everyone from age eight to 80+ is welcome to get involved with the Salford Family Orchestra - a BBC Philharmonic Orchestra project that brings together enthusiastic musicians and their families who live or work in Salford. For more information and/or to request an application form, please visit BBC Philharmonic or call 0161 836 1302 or email philharmonic@bbc.co.uk.

You can also stay in tune with music highlights at The Lowry, the spectacular arts venue at The Quays.
