City Airport Manchester

For a day out with a difference, or a special gift treat, why not take to the skies in Salford for a flying lesson over the city and beyond…?

City Airport Manchester (formerly Barton Aerodrome) is Salford’s very own airport and in fact, was the original Manchester Airport. Built in 1928, by 1929 it was the first municipal airfield in the UK to be licensed by the Air Ministry. Shortly afterwards, Imperial Airways were flying three times a week from Croydon and Birmingham to Manchester (Barton) Airport.

The site offers the Barton Visitor Centre, provided by Lancashire Aero Club, designed to encourage interest in aviation and provide a focal point. The centre is situated in the main Aerodrome Car Park and features a museum which holds talks for school parties and groups. There is great spectator viewing on the outdoor balcony on the 1st floor of the control tower and a visitor paddock area with seating provided, perfect for viewing aircraft take-off's and landings.

Flying lessons

City Airport Manchester is home to a number of flying schools which offer flying lessons in a variety of aircraft. Introductory Flying Lessons give the opportunity to go flying with a qualified instructor, and for you to actually take control of the microlight, aircraft or helicopter and experience the fun of flying for yourself. Trial lessons are ideally suited for the individual looking to take the first step towards a Pilot Licence, or as a special gift. Most schools operate a Gift Voucher scheme: vouchers can be purchased and then used within a fixed period.

So for a day out with a difference, whether you fancy soaring in the sky or keeping your feet firmly on the ground to enjoy the views, set your auto pilot for City Airport Manchester.
