Salford Triathlon

First timers

Congratulations on taking up the triple challenge.

If this is your first triathlon - you might want to whet your appetite with the sprint distance: 750m swim, 20km cycle, 5km run. Feel fit enough to tackle the full distance and you'll complete: a 1500m swim, 40km cycle, 10km run.

We've got two major tips. Firstly, get in touch with your local triathlon club - check the clubs section of British Triathlon's website. They'll be able to give you their support; you'll be able to pummel them for information. Clubs cater for all levels of ability and experience and either have their own qualified coaches or access to them. Being a member entitles you to membership of British Triathlon at a reduced cost.

Secondly, British Triathlon have put together all the info you should ever need - including details of upcoming events, kit, FAQ's and latest news on their website.

Whilst you're having a good read through that you will note that the Salford Triathlon has an open water swim - so you will need to borrow, hire or buy a wetsuit.

Open water swimming sessions

If you need practice swimming in open water there will be  weekly training sessions at The Quays which are open to all. The sessions take place in Ontario Basin right outside the Watersports Centre on Quays Road. Check back for more details on when the sessions start.

And finally...

If you can, have a look round the course the day before the race - looking out for tight bends on the bike route especially.

Best of luck with training and for the race. Whether you choose sprint or full distance - the sense of achievement you'll get when you cross the finish line will be worth the hard work!
