Film and TV

Think Salford looks familiar? Have a feeling you've seen it before? It's quite likely that you have. The city has been the backdrop for a number of popular feature films and has seen a resurgence in filming activity with many new TV programmes choosing Salford as a location.

Salford's close bond with the silver screen dates back to the kitchen sink drama A Taste of Honey in 1961. The film is a great example of the 1960's British black & white film product, using the 'old' Salford as its setting. More recently the comedy East is East made in 1999 was also set in Salford but this time in the 1970s.

Modern day Salford is regularly seen in TV soaps such as Coronation Street which puts the city on the world screen. It featured on Conviction, Spine Chillers, Max and Paddy's Road to Nowhere and Channel 4's Shameless.

Other hit dramas filmed in Salford include Cold Feet, Scott and Bailey, Life on Mars, No Offence and Poliakoff's Close to the Enemy.  Factual and reality television shows include The Great Interior Design Challenge, Salvage Hunters, Judge Rinder, Fake or Fortune and Great British Railway Journeys with Michael Portillo. From CBeebies' filming Stargazing, So Awkward and Blue Peter to Peter Kay's comedy sitcom Car Share, a lot of television is now made in Salford.

With the list of famous Salfordians including Albert Finney, Christopher Eccleston, Robert Powell and Sir Ben Kingsley, it's no wonder our city is at home on the silver screen.

Salford's no slouch in the music stakes either with 50 Cent and Justin Timberlake choosing to shoot videos in the city. Plenty more will be set to join them as MediaCityUK now provides a plethora of production and studio space to facilitate a diverse range of creative work.
