If your idea of Salford is still somewhat similar to an L S Lowry painting, you’re in for a surprise. World class architecture, hotels, shopping, designer living, plus major sporting and arts events are more the order of the day.
One of the world's first industrial cities, it's a place with a new, modern outlook that reflects the colossal changes going on here. Salford covers an area of 37 square miles, includes the districts of Eccles, Worsley, Irlam and Cadishead and Swinton and Pendlebury, and has a population of around 220,000 people.
At the forefront of the industrial revolution, Salford became one of the world's first industrial cities in the 1800s, with textiles and coal mining among major industries. Today, the city is home to The Lowry at The Quays, an impressive symbol of the changing face of Salford and one of the nation's most successful visitor attractions, attracting more than a million visitors in its first year.
With homes, shops, offices, restaurants, pubs, hotels and The Lowry, more than £400 million-worth of public and private sector funded developments at The Quays are almost complete. The stylish waterside development is already home to nearly 150 firms including such household names as BUPA and Avis Car Hire. Big-name employers in the city include Colgate Palmolive, and Cussons. The Lowry Outlet Mall features shops, bars, restaurants and the Vue Cinema. There are also landscaped walkways, a watersports centre, and a range of restaurants and bars.
Salford also boasts a thriving University, a major teaching hospital in Hope Hospital, rugby league club Salford Reds, and Worsley features some of the most sought-after housing in Greater Manchester.
The city is at the hub of the UK's transport network, with the M602, M60, M61 and M62 motorways all within the city boundaries. There are excellent road, and rail links, Manchester Airport is just 20 minutes away, and the Metrolink tram system now extends to Eccles and The Quays from Manchester city centre.
